Well UK teams with Home Start & Teignbridge DC

From kitchen nightmares to culinary delight, Teignbridge District Council has teamed up with the charities Home-Start and Well UK to help local families improve their cooking skills, nutritional knowledge, food hygiene and general health.

The aptly named Chrysalis Project aims to transform 20 kitchen novices in to confident culinary whizzes with a taste for fitness, and it got underway at St Mary's Church in Newton Abbot last Friday.  The six-session scheme will continue on a weekly basis throughout May, with two final sessions in June.  Participants have also been given three months membership of Newton Abbot Leisure Centre is order to help them get more exercise and work with fitness experts to devise a regular exercise programme.

Organisers hope to pass on vital life skills like cookery and nutritional awareness to help encourage healthy eating for families, while also encouraging more physical activity and a generally healthier lifestyle.  During the sessions the importance of good food hygiene practices will also be discussed and practiced with participants.

The 20 participants are all local mums who are being supported by Home-Start Teignbridge, a Charitable Voluntary Agency which trains and supports Volunteers to offer practical help, a listening ear and friendship to parents experiencing difficulties.  As an added bonus for those taking part, each member of the project will also be given the opportunity to take part in an accredited Level 2 Award in Food Hygiene, giving them a formal qualification and helping to create opportunities for any participants who might want to work in the catering industry.
